Carl [Allen] was opening for Art Blakey. He was told that there would be a drumset with an 18" kick, and that it was good. He went up there and saw that it was a 24" and a horrible set-up. No resonant heads, set-up badly, just a crappy set. He played and it was horrible. He went backstage and was kicking boxes, pissed off. Art Blakey went up, and it was great. Just sounded perfect. Art went backstage to ask what was wrong, Carl started *****ing about the set. Art Blakey responded "do you play the drums or do the drums play you?"
